The arts see no borders
The Petrozavodsk State Conservatory celebrated its 35th anniversary recently. The Conservatory was established as a Branch of Leningrad Conservatory, and later became a real successor of the fine traditions of the Russian higher music school. For many years the Karelian Conservatory was considered one of the best music schools throughout Russia. About the current situation in Petrozavodsk Conservatory we talk with the Rector of the Conservatory, Professor Vladimir Solovjev.
- Right after the establishment of the Conservatory, our students were taught by professors from Moscow and Leningrad, among whom I could mention such world-wide stars as pianists Vissarion Slonim, Zelma Tamarkina, Pavel Serebriakov, Krasnoslav Zubravsky, viola player Juri Kramarov, trumpeter Juri Bolshijanov, bayan-player Petr Govorushko, balalaika-player Aleksandr Shalov, musicologists Tatiana Bershadskaya, Anatoly Milka, Jusef Kon, harp-player Ariadna Tugai. And the new generation turned out to be worthy of their teachers. Now, Petrozavodsk Conservatory has grown up many prominent and famous names. Among others, these are Viktor Portnoi, Ruvim Ostrovsky, Julia Tishkina, Klimenti Veksler, Vyacheslav Kalaberda, U-Gen-Ir, Albin Repnikov, Natalia Klimenko, Irina Gridchina, Boris Tsykov, Anatoly Denisenko.
The Conservatory hosts all faculties of the music art. Among our students you will find a big variety of laureates and diploma-holders of Russian and international contests. The Conservatory lives an interesting and rich professional life. Several years ago, we opened a faculty of acting technique.
Now the graduates of this pilot training course are actors of the National Theatre. For over a decade a department of the Finnish and Ugric music has been training folklore experts and managers of traditional music bands. I think, in future, Petrozavodsk Conservatory can become not just a music centre of the Northwest Russia but grow into an arts higher school. We are ready to host other arts at our Conservatory – painting, choreography. The northwest Russia is rich in talented people, and I am sure we could give a worthy education to our gifted youth. In the last decade, we established close contacts with other countries – every year groups of students from South Korea come to study here, Scandinavian students have student practice at the Conservatory. The high quality and advantages of the Russian music school are well appreciated around the world and do our best to be adequate to these assessments.
The number of foreign students getting education here grows increasingly every year. It is clear that to implement our creative plans, to update the music instruments and repair the premises we need resources. We will be grateful to any friendly assistance from music lovers. From our side, we are ready to hold master classes, lectures in any required format and educate foreign students and post-graduate students.
I am really sure that finding a common language is not a problem because the arts see no boundaries!
